My client was going through piles of things she’d put in containers years ago. She was puzzled why she hung on to them for so long. I said it’s common that we identify with the things in our lives. On some level we feel they are part of us. We don’t question their existence. So we end up hanging on to them. Our lives end up becoming heavy as a result and we suffer.
I said the work she was doing now, looking at each item, questioning whether it served her today or not, was her key to freedom. With each piece of clutter she let go of, she was recognizing she’s not her stuff. It was also a reminder that things come and go in our lives. Come and go and come and go. We are the only thing that remains. We can only have peace of mind when we honor our presence in life above everything else.
