It takes ignoring the media and social messages that illuminate the contrasts between us. Those come out of fear of “the other.”
What helps is to recognize that another person has thoughts, feelings, and emotions just like us. They have fears, hopes, and desires. There are more similarities than differences.
When we start to recognize those basic similar qualities, the need for defense comes down. I know from experience the amazing feeling that comes from discovering that someone who I was afraid of has become a friend.
