For instance, I’m just now recognizing how amazing it is that my fingers so easily type these words. And that they are incredibly synced up with my brain to do its bidding. The fingers and the brain don’t argue. They don’t refuse to communicate. One of them doesn’t try and belittle the other by saying they are right. It all works as simply and easily as water flowing down the river.
Another thing that came to me is the unbelievable machine that I’m typing these words on. This computer allows me to write and send this to you in ways I’ll never fully understand. The circuits underneath the keyboard alone are mind blowing. And this machine is wireless, so I’m outside in the sunshine, not having to be tied down to a desk. If you told me when I was eleven that I would one day be able to do this, I would have thought that you were a science fiction geek, and to get a grip.
And it stupefys my mind that I’ve never met you and you are reading this. With the many billions of people there are on the Earth, how bizarre, unknowable, and lucky the elements that have to come together to make anybody connect with another.
One of the last unnoticed till now gold chunks things that comes to mind happened earlier this morning. I was walking up the stairs. My wife was at the top of the stairs. I got the feeling and said to her, “I’m a millionaire that I can walk up these stairs!” I asked her to take my picture to document the moment. Actually, this one I notice regularly. A little more than five years ago, after getting a double lung transplant, I had to go to rehab to learn how to walk again. That was really hard. But what was especially hard to learn and do again was going up the stairs. It’s a greater than you can imagine effort to lift the weight of your body every time you stand or take a step, and especially-especially if you have to light that weight while going up the stairs. I didn’t know that wealth until I lost it, and then got it back.
