A way for change to be easier

January 12, 2021 by Brooks Palmer Leave a Comment

Change can be difficult. It’s hard when things stop being like they used to be. We are going through a time of great, great change. It won’t go back to how it used to be. But that’s true of life anyway. Life is constantly changing to something new.

The best we can do is to accept change is happening and it’s uncomfortable.

What causes the greatest pain is the thought, “This shouldn’t be happening.” It’s denying the occurrence of what is. It creates great confusion in us. Part of us feels like the universe is out of order. While a deeper but less conscious part of us knows that life is different. We are pulled in two directions. It creates immense suffering.

When in the midst of this inner turmoil, it can help to focus on your breath. Noticing your breath is a simple way to come back to the present moment. It helps us be here. Being here in the only stability that exists in times of tremendous change. There can be pain here, but it comes with acceptance. This brings a feeling of peace, even with the pain and discomfort. That’s because we are going with the flow.

To resist the flow of change is tremendous pain. To go with the flow creates space in and around us. With the space comes clarity. The feeling of overwhelm begins to evaporate. You feel like you are getting your life back.

I definitely recommend him. His 'clutterbusting workshop' was incredibly popular, with over 100 people attending -- that's HUGE for our library! He provided a good mix of instruction, anecdotes, and compassion in his presentation. He started his talk by telling us to please ask questions as they came up -- so he can know what we need help with and tailor his stories and advice for this audience specifically. Everyone was engaged and enthusiastic. More than one person told me afterward that they just couldn't wait to get home and get started decluttering!
